The 40 inch Sony KDL-40XBR6 is one of the best performers in this size class. It is a high-end LCD TV and it features 120Hz video processing, superb black levels and the colors, though not perfectly accurate, are pretty good. It is also very good at handling well lit environments thanks to its efficient anti-glare screen. It is a bit expensive but, considering the quality it offers, it’s worth it.

Samsung LN40A650 – 120Hz 1080p 40″ LCD HDTV

With 120Hz refresh rate and a 1080p screen, the LN40A650 from Samsung is another excellent LCD TV. Its picture quality is at the same level with that of Sony KDL-40XBR6. It has very deep black levels and superb colors. Anti-glare performance is inferior to Sony KDL-40XBR6.

  • Offers access to Internet services.
  • Plenty of connectivity options and picture settings.
  • 120Hz video processing.

  • The "red touch of color" may not appeal everybody.

Samsung LN40A750 – 120Hz 1080p 40″ LCD HDTV

Samsung LN40A750 is in a way LN40A650 on steroids. It is similar to LN40A650 in many ways but it offers a bigger feature set. Unfortunatelly, these extra features increase the price compared to LN40A650. The picture quality is just as good as that of LN40A650 – deep blacks and great colors make up a superb overall picture.

Samsung LN40A550 – 60Hz 1080p 40″ LCD HDTV

Samsung LN40A550 is an LCD TV that offers superb picture quality at a great price. It lacks many of the features of LN40A750 and LN40A650, features like 120Hz and Internet connectivity, but at the same time it is cheaper. Picture quality is superb, LN40A550 having deep black levels and good colors.

  • Accurate colors.
  • Deep blacks.
  • Good viewing angle.
  • Slightly better anti-glare performance compared to LN40A650 and LN40A750.

Cons

  • No 120Hz processing.

Though not as great as the more expensive higher-end models from Sony and Samsung, Sony KDL-40Z4100 is still a very good LCD TV. It has good colors, relativelly good black levels, and the overall picture quality is good. When it comes to black levels, though it is better than many other LCD TVs, KDL-40Z4100 falls behind other high-end models, especially because of its black level uniformity issues.

Sony KDL-40W4100 – 120Hz 1080p 40″ LCD HDTV

This 40 inch LCD TV is one of the cheaper models with 120Hz refresh rate and good dejudder performance. Though the picture quality is generally good, black level fluctuations make it fall behind higher-end models from Sony and its competition from Samsung, even the cheaper Samsung LN40A550.

Pros

  • Deep black levels.
  • Overall picture quality is good but fails short of the higher-end models.
  • 120Hz refresh rate, even though it is a cheaper model.
  • Anti-glare properties of the screen handle reflections well.
  • Compared to Samsung LN40A550, it has 120Hz video processing and good dejudder performance.

Cons

  • Viewing angle isn’t too great.
  • Fluctuation of black levels.
  • Overall picture quality does’t match that of Samsung LN40A550.

LG 42LG60 – 120Hz 1080p 42″ LCD HDTV

The overall picture quality of the 42 inch LG 42LG60 is good. Not as great as that of competing models from Samsung and Sony, however. It does compensate through features, offering quite an impressive set of settings and picture modes.

  • Good overall picture quality.
  • Accurate colors.
  • 120Hz video processing.
  • Very good anti-glare screen.
  • Full range of picture settings.
  • Many picture modes independent per input.

Cons

  • Black levels are not as deep as those on competing LCD TV models or plasma TVs.
  • Average uniformity.
  • Average viewing angle.
  • Red back may not appeal to everybody.
