Leaving aside the extremely high price you have to pay for it, Sony KDL-46XBR8 is an exceptional HDTV. Its black levels are as deep as those found on the best plasma TV – Pioneer Kuro Elite – and the colors are very accurate. The exceptional picture quality is complemented by the superior anti-glare screen and the superior video processing system. On the down side, aside from the outrageous price, the viewing angle though better than on other LCDs, is still inferior compared to a plasma TV.

The feature packed Samsung LN46A950 comes right behind Sony KDL-46XBR8. It has an exceptional picture quality, with black levels as good as some of the best plasma TVs, as well as very accurate colors. Though not as insanelly expensive as the KDL-46XBR6, compared to other HDTV the price can be considered high.

  • Superb black levels thanks to its LED backlighting. Black levels are as good as those found in some of the best plasma TVs.

Cons

  • Relatively expensive, though much cheaper than Sony KDL-46XBR8.
  • Viewing-angle is not great, plasma TVs and Sony KDL-46XBR8 performing better in this area.
  • Anti-glare properties of the screen are not great.

Aside from the 120Hz refresh rate and 1080p resolution that come standard with today’s high-end LCD TVs, this 46 inch Panasonic LCD HDTV has every exotic feature you could think of. This is the main reason for the high price. If you can live without such features, some cheaper LCD TV models offer the same superb picture quality.

  • Good viewing angle for an LCD.

  • Expensive. The price is high mostly because of the huge feature set.
  • The screen is shiny and because of that you can get reflections.
  • "Red touch of color" though interesting and unique, might not suit everybody’s taste.
  • Slight screen uniformity issues.

Positioned in between Samsung LN46A750 and LN46A550, the 46 inch LN46A650 offers a good balance between picture quality, features and price. The quality of the picture is excellent, with deep black levels and accurate colors. It does not match the picture quality offered by the expensive LED backlit models, however it is not as expensive either.

Roughly a the same level with Samsung LN46A650, this 46 inch Sony LCD from XBR6 class offers similar picture quality. Though the colors are slightly inaccurate, the deep black levels help it generate an excellent picture. Though is is relatively expensive, do not be scared, its price is nothing close to KDL-46XBR8’s.

If you want a 46" LCD HDTV that offers great value for money, Samsung LN46A550 is a great choice. Its picture quality is superb, similar to that of the more expensive Samsung models from series A750 and A650. However, it lacks many of the extra features those more expensive models have. It has no 120Hz refresh rate and no interactive features, but considering the price, LN46A550 is a great deal.

Though it fails short of other LCD TVs when it comes to black levels, especially black level uniformity, the KDL-46Z4100 is a very good LCD HDTV overall. It is better than most LCD TVs out there, having relativelly accurate colors.

Though black levels are good compared to most LCD TVs, they are not as good as the ones found in some of the best LCD TVs and most plasma TVs. The colors are accurate, however, and it manages to impress through the number of picture modes independent per input.

  • Black levels are not too great.

  • The back side is red. Not a big issue since you don’t normally see it, but some may not like it.

Though the overall picture quality is not as great as that of more expensive models, especially because of the black levels, this 46" LCD HDTV can be considered a good HDTV for those with a smaller budget. Also, it is one of the least expensive models with 120Hz refresh rate. The worst thing about it is the poor performance when viewed off-angle.

  • Overall picture quality is fairly good.
  • 120Hz refresh rate, even though it is a cheaper model.
  • The anti-glare screen handles reflections well.

Cons

  • Viewing angle isn’t too great.
