This 50 inch 1080p model from Pioneer is the best HDTV money can buy. The picture quality of PRO-111FD is spectacular and only a couple other HDTVs come close to it. This is a TV that will make your jaw drop! It is very expensive, but if you can afford to buy it, it will be everything you’ve hoped for and more.

Pioneer Kuro PDP 5020FD is one of the best HDTVs out there. It’s only sin is not to have advanced color controls (e.g. color temperature), especially considering the fact that it has inaccurate primary colors. Aside from this relativelly minor issue, it is everything you could hope for. Being a Pioneer model, black levels are the best you can find and overall picture quality is exceptional.

Panasonic TH-50PZ850U – 1080p 50″ Plasma HDTV

Packed with features, the most notable of them being Viera Cast, this 50 inch plasma HDTV allows you to watch YouTube videos, see local weather and more, directly on the TV without using a computer. Picture quality is very good, even though it has slightly oversaturated colors. The blacks are deep and that helps TH-50PZ850U produce great pictures.

  • Viera Cast technology allows it to connect to Internet and provide you with services as current weather, stocks, news, YouTube videos, etc.
  • Great overall picture quality
  • Very deep black levels
  • Plenty of connectivity options
  • Very good anti-glare screen
  • High burn-in resistance

Cons

  • Inaccurate colors. If you like more vivid colors however, you will find this an advantage.
  • Relativelly expensive
  • Not the blackest blacks

Panasonic TH-50PZ800U – 1080p 50″ Plasma HDTV

Though it lacks Viera Cast, this 50 inch plasma HDTV shines in other areas. The TH-50PZ800U is able to produce a great picture quality thanks to its very deep black levels and highly accurate colors. It is cheaper than Pioneer Kuro models, and though it isn’t equally impressive, it does come close.

Samsung PN50A650 – 1080p 50″ Plasma HDTV

Though it doesn’t rise above top of the line models from Panasonic and Pioneer, this 1080p 50" plasma HDTV offers very good overall picture quality and it is slightly cheaper. It doesn’t excell in any area, but still, it is superior to most HDTVs on the market. The dissapointing aspect with this plasma TV is the anti-glare performance – if you have a very bright room, you will get glare.

Pros

  • Though not the best, it is a very good HDTV.
  • Very good black levels.
  • Accurate colors.
  • Unique design with a "red touch of color".
  • Good value
  • Good resistance to burn-in.
  • Cheaper than many other high-end HDTVs.

Cons

  • Mediocre anti-glare screen. Reflects light more than other HDTVs.
  • Black levels though good, are not as impressive as those from Panasonic and Pioneer models.
  • Comes only with a "red touch of color" which may not suit everybody’s taste.
  • Not an exceptional performer, but still much better than most other HDTVs

Panasonic TH-50PX80U – 1080p 50″ Plasma HDTV

If you don’t have much money and you can live without 1080p, this 50" 720p plasma HDTV is a great choice. Even though its colors are not accurate, it has deep black levels and overall good picture quality.

  • Pretty cheap considering its quality
  • Good black levels
  • Good anti-glare screen
  • Good resistance to burn-in

Cons

  • Inaccurate colors
  • "Only" 720p resolution, but if you don’t plan to watch 1080p content or you will sit at the optimal distance for 720p, the smaller resolution will not be a problem.
