The insanelly expensive Sony KDL-55XBR8 offers a picture quality unparalelled by any other LCD HDTV. Black levels are just as good as those found in the best plasma TVs and color acuracy is perfect. This 55" LCD HDTV is however the worst deal you can get, its price being too high compared to other exceptional HDTV models as Samsung LN55A950 LCD and Pioneer Kuro Elite plasma TVs.

  • Outstanding overall picture quality.
  • Exceptional black levels. As good as those found in the best plasma TVs.
  • Very accurate colors.
  • Superior video procesing.
  • Exceptional anti-glare screen.
  • Plenty of connectivity options.
  • Superb screen uniformity.

Cons

  • Extremelly expensive.
  • For such an expensive TV, the viewing angle could have been better.

Samsung LN55A950 – 120Hz 1080p 55″ LCD HDTV

Though a much better deal than Sony KDL-55XBR8, this 55 inch Samsung from series A960 is still on the expensive side. It does offer however a more realistic balance between price and performance compared to Sony’s XBR8 models. As you may expect from a high end model, the picture of LN55A950 is exceptional. Black levels are very deep thanks to the LED backlit panel and colors are very accurate.

Pros

  • Exceptional overall picture quality.
  • Superb black levels thanks to its LED backlighting. Black levels are as good as those found in some of the best plasma TVs.
  • Highly accurate colors.
  • Superior video processing.
  • Plenty of conectivity options.
  • Interactive features.

Cons

  • Relativelly expensive, though much cheaper than Sony KDL-46XBR8.
  • Viewing-angle is not great, plasma TVs and Sony KDL-46XBR8 performing better in this area.
  • Screen is shiny and reflects light.
