LG 42LH90 LCD TV Review

April 11, 2010

This 42 inch LCD TV has a lot to offer, as the LH90 series from LG is ambitiously aiming to match image performance consumers usually see on plasma televisions. LG 42LH90 sports a lot of connectivity options, amazing black levels for an LCD TV, great looking colors, and new technologies, such as 240Hz refresh rate, local dimming and LED-backlighting. Although it does have some minor issues, like the effect of blooming when white objects are projected on a black background, overall, LG 42LH90 is a very good LCD TV, gifted with everything that is needed for a great watching experience.

Note: This review only covers the most important aspects related to picture quality. To find out more about this TV, also read LG 55LH90 review which covers the 55 inch variant of the LH90 series. Performance

Reliable black levels, accurate colors, and a very solid greyscale, make image quality for LG 42LH90 to be truly amazing for an LCD TV. While trying to get close to many plasma counterparts that are known for amazing picture quality, this particular model succeeds for the most part, with the exception of a few minor issues, concerning especially its video processing capabilities.

Black Levels

The blacks on LG 42LH90’s screen are very well displayed, and they are as black as they can be. Shadow detail is not bad, either, and together, they make for a very good image quality.

Color Accuracy

Taking advantage of the accurate greyscale LG 42LH90 sports, the colors on this model are both crisp and vivid. They may not be quite as amazing as seen on plasma TVs, but they are still natural and great looking.

Video Processing

High definition content will be watched on this 1080p LCD TV with great delight, except that fiddling with the features may prove to be somewhat bothersome. When you want to activate the anti-blur feature, that comes in handy for fast moving scenes, you will be engaging the dejudder processing as well, while the contrary is also true. Also, the 240Hz refresh rate is not that noticeable, making it more of a marketing gimmick rather than true value for the buyer.

Anti-Glare

LG 42LH90 comes equipped with a great matte screen, that has absolutely no problems with reflections. When you watch your programs in a room that is very well lit, you will not be experiencing any of such problems, as it happens with Samsung models. This is, indeed, a plus for this 42 inch LCD TV, which truly is great value.

Standard Definition (SDTV) Performance

Not very fond of high definition content? You can always switch on to the good old faithful standard definition that LG 42LH90 has absolutely no problem handling it. Regular DVDs and SD channels will be displayed accurately on your screen, and no artifacts will hurt your eye while in the process.

Conclusion

Even if you are picky about your choice in HDTV, placing LG 42LH90 on your list should not be a problem. The LCD TV has great picture quality (which is what counts most), and also plenty of connectivity options to go around. Despite its minor drawbacks, this is still one of the best LCD TV series currently showcased on the market.
