Samsung LN40B650 LCD TV Review

April 10, 2010

Samsung LN40B650 does not have a very big screen, but it does have other qualities that recommend it. First, it is part of the B650 series, and that is why it shares all the good points the series have. These include a very reliable connectivity, great colors, and access to video streaming options that make from Samsung LN40B650 a very good 40 inch LCD TV, rising over its competitors in the same price range. Being a newer type of LCD TV, it has 120Hz refresh rate, and, although it is not on par with 240Hz models, the difference given by this particular trait are not that visible to justify a bigger spending.

Note: This particular review covers the most important aspects related to LN40B650’s picture quality. If you would like to find out more about this TV, you should also read Samsung LN55B650 review, which offers a bit more information.

  • Crisp, vivid colors
  • Presence of 4 HDMI ports
  • Low energy consumption
  • Very good overall quality
  • Relatively good value for money

Cons

  • It does not perform well under bright light conditions
  • It has no S-video input
  • Sligh blue tinge in dark areas (a problem specific to quite a few LCD TVs)

Features

  • 1080p resolution
  • 120Hz refresh rate
  • 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
  • 4 HDMI connectors
  • Ethernet / Internet connectivity
  • 2 USB ports
  • Media 2.0

Performance

Samsung LN40B650 is a good buy if you are going to watch high definition content, but it is not a bad choice, either, if you are still going to watch regular programs. Image quality is good, especially because of the vivid colors it is capable of displaying, although its levels of black are not as good as seen on newer series coming from the same manufacturer, such as B750.

Black Levels

Image quality depends on the performance the black levels can deliver, although not entirely. The black levels on Samsung LN40B650 are decent, but nothing more, and shadow detail usually does not have enough juice to deliver great performance. Yet, only when compared to other, more competitive models, such differences become apparent, and, for the average consumer, it should not be a big deal.

Colors

Color accuracy is amazing for an LCD TV in this league. Samsung did its homework for the discipline called color decoding, and the results are, indeed, great. Primary and secondary colors are excellent, and they look both natural and crisp, contributing to raising the level of image quality for this particular model.

Video Processing

Due to great dejudder processing capabilities, Samsung LN40B650 has no problem in delivering the best results in terms of video processing. No matter what type of high definition content you intend to watch, you will be truly satisfied. The image looks perfect, artifact free, although the 120Hz refresh rate feature does not show great enhancement of the LCD TV’s capabilities.

Glare and Reflections

Unfortunately, anti-reflective capabilities of this LCD TV model are lacking, and watching the screen under bright light conditions does not offer such a good deal. Dark scenes show some amount of reflection that can be troublesome, so it is not exactly recommended it to place your Samsung LN40B650 in a room that is going to be lit all the time.

Standard Definition Performance

Samsung LN40B650 is good for watching standard definition content, as its noise reduction feature does a great job. Jaggies or moire are eliminated, and overall, any type of standard definition content you may want to watch will be displayed properly.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a mid range LCD TV that has good image quality, great connectivity, and amazing colors, plus a few extras, Samsung LN40B650 is for you. Despite some minor drawbacks, like bluish tinge in darker scenes, it is still a good purchase, provided that its price goes a little lower, or you find a good deal.
