Samsung PN50B850 Plasma TV Review

April 10, 2010

The high tech appearance the company has set up for this 50 inch plasma TV is the main feature that differentiate Samsung PN50B850 from the products coming from the 650 series. It will cost you more to acquire this gorgeous HDTV, and this difference in price is only justified by the company’s investment in the 1.2 inches thick frame. However, the most fashionable individuals with the money to go around will appreciate this aspect, even though this Samsung plasma TV has a little less extras than the 860 models from the same manufacturer. Just comparing Samsung PN50B850 with the 650 series, we can easily see that the image quality and performance are on par, which are nothing short of excellent.

Pros

  • Slim design – 1.2 inch
  • Very good black levels
  • Accurate colors
  • Solid SDTV processing

Cons

  • More expensive than PN50B650 (mostly because it is only 1.2 inch thick)
  • Lacks S-Video connectors

Features

  • 1080p Full-HD resolution
  • Ultra slim design
  • E-Panel technology
  • Medi@2.0
  • Crystal full HD engine
  • Picture-in-picture (PIP)

Performance

Do not expect to see tremendous changes from the 650 series in this one. Samsung PN50B850 has about the same technical specs and the same performance, and there are even tests showing that black levels do have a little to suffer in the more expensive model, which is not exactly good advertising. Yet, the differences are so little, that they can be easily overlooked. Keep in mind that this model is a great HDTV, and its colors are even better than those on the famous V10 series from the competitor Panasonic.

Black Levels

Panasonic is the company that has tried and almost succeeded to match the black levels on the defunct Kuro. However, Samsung comes as a close second, and Samsung PN50B850 is one model to prove this statement. Its black levels are nothing but excellent, and this reflects on the level of realism lent to the picture quality and the amount of shadow detail.

Colors

Samsung PN50B850 has incredibly crisp, clear colors, even better than those seen on Panasonic’s latest series. Color accuracy is close to perfection, with primary and secondary color saturated enough to give you a watching experience that you will not easily forget. There is no wonder why Samsung PN50B850 catches your eye, if you see it on the shelves.

Video Processing

When it comes to high definition performance, Samsung PN50B850 is great. It can deal with 1080p and 1080i sources, with absolutely no sweat, and Blu-rays can also be watched on it. It comes appointed with automatic implementation for 1080p/24 video content, so prepare yourself for a great watching experience. Plus, the model features the 600Hz subfield motion technology for reducing motion blur, but this is hardly an enhancer, as plasma TVs do not encounter such problems, by default.

SDTV Performance

While it is a great high definition performer, the same thing is valid for standard definition, too. Be it regular television, or regular DVDs, the model gives nothing but the best. It does not experience glitches, or artefacts, and, overall, its standard definition performance is much better than seen on most plasma TVs.

Conclusion

There is little you get over the 650 series with Samsung PN50B850. It does cost more, however, while having the same performance, but its sleek, cool appearance is guaranteed to catch your eye. Samsung PN50B850 justifies its price by putting together performance and looks, so there is basically almost nothing more you can ask of it.
